This portrait shows Lieutenant Hugh Rodman, who was later promoted to admiral, standing in front of or aboard the U.S.S. Raleigh, a protected steel cruiser commissioned in the early 1890s as part of the Navy's modernization after decades of wooden sailing ships. The record dates the glass negative to around 1898, a year of heightened naval activity during the Spanish-American War. The print comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American places and people, and it is attributed to a photographer named Hart based on negative numbering.
