Two lieutenants and a pay clerk of the U.S.S. Raleigh are the subjects of this view, which turns attention from the cruiser's guns to the men who ran its administration. The title names Lieutenants Chadwick and Kiely, but the record does not say where on the ship the picture was taken. The Raleigh was commissioned in 1895 as one of the Navy's protected steel cruisers, part of a fleet that was expanding as the United States extended its reach overseas. The two nearly identical 8 by 10 inch glass negatives are possibly the work of a photographer named Hart and were issued by the Detroit Publishing Company around 1900.
