Two close variants of this glass negative show the protected cruiser U.S.S. Raleigh's officers and a pay clerk posed together aboard ship, with Lieutenants Chadwick and Kiely named in the title. The Raleigh was commissioned in 1895 and belonged to the post-1880s effort to build a steel navy, so these men represent the service at a time when American warships were newly modern and the country was extending its reach overseas. The prints came from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely and sold views of ships, ports, and places, and the negatives are attributed to a photographer named Hart on the basis of their numbering. Their 8 by 10 inch format was typical of the period's commercial work.
