The U.S.S. Raleigh, a protected cruiser of the new steel navy, is the subject of this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, which the Detroit Publishing Company made as one of its large-format views. The catalog number and the 1901 catalog used for dating place the image sometime between 1894 and 1901. Cruisers of this type were fast, lightly armored ships built to scout, protect merchant shipping and show the flag overseas. The company sold such views of ships, cities and landscapes to tourists and collectors, so this plate reflects both a growing public interest in the modern navy and the photographic methods of the period.
