The torpedo boat *Foote* is the subject here, and the U.S.S. *New York*, an armored cruiser, appears in the right background, placing the scene in a naval harbor where the two ships could be seen together. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued thousands of views of American places and industry in the 1890s and early 1900s, made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative, and its catalog dates the image to about 1897 to 1901. Torpedo boats were small, fast vessels built to attack larger warships, so the contrast in scale with the cruiser behind it is worth noticing. The negative later came to the State Historical Society of Colorado as a gift and was transferred to the Library of Congress.
