The Navy's *Dolphin* was a steel-hulled dispatch vessel rather than a battleship, a small, fast ship built for carrying messages and officials between ports. Its service in the 1880s and 1890s was part of a broader effort to rebuild the American fleet after decades of neglect, when the country was shifting from wooden sailing warships toward steam and steel. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass negative, was known for sending photographers across the country to record ships, towns and landscapes for sale as views. Because the negative's date is inferred from the company's 1901 catalog, the picture probably dates from around that time.
