The U.S.S. Dolphin was a steel-hulled dispatch ship launched in 1884, built to carry messages and officials rather than to fight in a battle line. The catalog record calls it a gunboat, a loose label that reflects how the Navy grouped small warships in those years. This 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative dates from between about 1885 and 1901 and was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely recording American places and ships. The large format preserves fine detail in the hull and rigging.
