The *Thetis* was a Dundee-built whaler that the U.S. Navy bought in 1884 for the relief of Adolphus Greely's stranded Arctic expedition. Under Winfield Scott Schley, she reached the survivors at Cape Sabine that summer, and the rescue made the ship widely known. Her later service in Alaskan and Bering Sea waters tied her to the federal government's growing presence in the North. This Detroit Publishing Company view, made from a glass negative, dates from the years when the ship was still in government hands and shows her as she looked in working service.
