Moored at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the U.S.S. Vermont appears here as a receiving ship, a vessel that stayed in port to house and process new recruits rather than going to sea. Such ships were a familiar part of the yard's waterfront in the late 1890s, when the navy was expanding and the yard was one of its busiest centers for building and repairing ships. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers worked across the country and whose large glass negatives recorded fine detail in ships and harbors. The date of about 1898 is an estimate based on the negative's numbering rather than a written date.
