This view shows the U.S.S. Vermont, one of the battleships of the early twentieth-century American fleet, which the United States was building up as it became a major naval power. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its wide range of American views, made the picture on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate sometime between 1907 and 1915. The negative reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. Its survival in glass gives researchers a sharp, large-format record of a ship from the years when the battleship was the central symbol of naval strength.
