Few American battleships of the early twentieth century had a more distinctive profile than the USS *New Jersey*, which was commissioned in 1906 as one of the Navy's newer capital ships. This large glass negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company, captures the vessel in the years just after its completion, when steel-hulled battleships were a powerful symbol of American naval reach. The ship later sailed with the Great White Fleet on its 1907 to 1909 voyage around the world, a cruise that showed the country's growing role on the global stage. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its travel views, produced many images of ships and harbors that were widely sold to the public.
