Few battleships of the era were as widely photographed as the USS Minnesota, a Connecticut-class ship the U.S. Navy commissioned in 1907. This view survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, a format that recorded fine detail on large ships. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American landscapes, cities and institutions before World War I, made the image. Its date is uncertain but falls between 1907 and 1915, when new battleships stood as symbols of American naval power.
