The U.S.S. Minnesota was a pre-dreadnought battleship of the United States Navy, commissioned in 1906, and this glass transparency from about 1907 captures it in its first years of service. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial photography firm known for its color and tinted views of American scenery and places, produced the image, which was later donated to the Library of Congress by the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949. Battleships like the Minnesota were the centerpieces of the American fleet in the early twentieth century, and the period saw the Navy's rapid expansion under Theodore Roosevelt, including the sixteen-ship Great White Fleet cruise of 1907 to 1909.
