Two vessels from different worlds share one frame here: a Chinese junk with its high, square sails drifting beside a British battleship in Hong Kong harbor. Hong Kong had been a British colony since the 1842 Treaty of Nanking, and the contrast in this view, between a traditional wooden sailing craft and a steel warship of the imperial navy, captures the colony's position between Chinese and British maritime life. The card was issued around 1902 by C.H. Graves of Philadelphia, one of many stereographs sold for viewing through a stereoscope, which gave armchair travelers a sense of depth and distance.
