Few prints of the War of 1812 at sea show a single capture this specifically: the frigate Essex, under Commodore David Porter, taking the British sloop Alert. Porter took the Essex into the Pacific during the war to raid British whaling ships, and the Alert was one of the few Royal Navy vessels she met there. This picture is a reproduction of a drawing by an artist named Hart, published as an illustration in an 1875 memoir of Porter, so it shows a later artist's view of an event from more than sixty years earlier.
