Drawn by the Japanese artist Taguchi Shumpei, this watercolor shows the U.S.S. Susquehanna from its starboard side. The steam frigate was the flagship of Commodore Matthew C. Perry, and the date of July 9, 1853, places the drawing during the expedition's first visit to Edo Bay, when Perry arrived to press Japan to open its ports after more than two centuries of restricted foreign contact. Japanese observers produced many sketches of these unfamiliar warships during those weeks. The careful attention to hull, masts and rigging shows how the vessels appeared to people who had never seen anything like them.
