Two steam-powered warships of Commodore Matthew Perry's squadron, the *Susquehanna* and the *Mississippi*, are the subjects of this 1853 watercolor by a Japanese artist. Both ships belonged to the United States Naval Expedition to Japan, which reached Edo Bay that summer to press for trade and for the opening of Japanese ports. Japanese painters of the period were intrigued by these vessels, whose smoke, paddle wheels and sheer size were unlike anything in local shipbuilding. The drawing's attention to the ships' equipment makes it a useful record of how Japanese observers saw the foreign fleet.
