This view shows the U.S.S. Tennessee from the port side, a vantage that lets the viewer see the ship's profile, hull lines, and superstructure. The Navy named its warships after states, and the Tennessee name recurred across several vessels over the years. The photograph is by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large commercial output of American views in the late 1800s and early 1900s, which sold images of ships, cities, and landscapes to a broad public. The date of about 1895 to 1900 comes from an unverified caption card, so it is best read as an estimate. The print is a useful record of how the Navy presented its steel fleet to the public at the turn of the century.
