The battleship Kentucky, a Kearsarge-class ship that entered service around 1900, was built during a period of rapid naval expansion as the United States extended its reach beyond its coasts. This view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for photographs of American places and subjects taken in the late 1890s through the 1910s. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year the picture was taken is unknown. Its value lies in showing how the Navy's large steel warships looked to the public in that era.
