This side view shows the U.S.S. Arkansas, a warship photographed around September 19, 1906, according to the date in its record. The picture captures the hull and superstructure in profile, the way naval architects and the navy itself documented ships for comparison and record-keeping. In the mid-1900s, the American navy was expanding rapidly, and battleships were the central symbol of national power. Photographs like this one show the long gun-armed hulls and tall masts that defined the era's fleets before steam turbines and all-big-gun designs changed warship design.
