Of the naval views on this board, this one shows the U.S.S. Alliance, a cruiser of the United States Navy, captured on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate. The Detroit Publishing Company, whose 1901 catalog helps date the negative to between 1890 and 1901, produced it during a period when the American navy was shifting from wooden hulls toward steel warships. The State Historical Society of Colorado gave the plate to the Library of Congress in 1949, and it remains a useful record of the ship from those years.
