Unlike the other warships on this board, the U.S.S. Tarazed was a refrigerated cargo ship. It was built as a commercial vessel for the Unifruitco fleet, the shipping arm of United Fruit Company, and was taken into the Navy's service in the early 1940s. This May 1942 print, one of a numbered set, shows the ship in the wartime camouflage the Navy applied to its vessels to make them harder for enemy submarines and aircraft to identify and track at sea. Such irregular patterns of paint, often in grays and blues, were tested throughout the war, and this view records one stage in that effort.
