The ship in this photograph is the U.S. Navy destroyer Maddox (DD-731), shown under way at sea in 1964. That year the Maddox was at the center of the Gulf of Tonkin incidents, in which it reported coming under fire from North Vietnamese torpedo boats while running an electronic intelligence patrol off the coast of North Vietnam. The reports of the August 4 clash were later questioned, but they helped prompt Congress to pass the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which widened American military involvement in Vietnam. As a Gearing-class destroyer, the ship reflects a postwar fleet design that had its roots in World War II.
