The record names the U.S.S. Virginia, a pre-dreadnought battleship commissioned in 1906 and one of the steel-hulled capital ships that gave the United States Navy a major presence in the early twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its color and black-and-white views of American places and ships, made this image on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, a format that captured fine detail in the hull and superstructure. The plate was later donated to the State Historical Society of Colorado and transferred to the Library of Congress, so the negative itself survives as a record of the ship during its active years.
