Lying off Norfolk in December 1864, the flagship *Malvern* was a converted steamer that served as the headquarters vessel for Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter's naval forces, which were then preparing for the attack on Fort Fisher, North Carolina. The ship had started out as a blockade runner before the Union Navy captured and commissioned it. This wet collodion glass negative belongs to the Library of Congress's Civil War collection. The record credits it to Alexander Gardner, but that attribution is now listed as a former one, so the photographer is uncertain.
