Here the presidential yacht *Mayflower* is the focus, with a line of U.S. battleships dressed for a salute as it passes through Hampton Roads, the broad anchorage at the mouth of the James and Elizabeth Rivers in Virginia. The *Mayflower* served as a presidential yacht during Theodore Roosevelt's administration, and the era's naval reviews and expositions often brought warships and official vessels together in these waters. The record suggests the ships may have been the Squadron of Evolution, a fleet that trained and showed the flag in the years before the Great White Fleet. The photograph was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose glass-plate views document American travel and naval life around 1907.
