Among the Detroit Publishing Company's views of government ships, this one shows the U.S.S. Mayflower, a steam yacht the Navy took into service around the time of the Spanish-American War in 1898. Built as a private yacht for pleasure cruising, she was pressed into government use and later served as a presidential yacht, carrying Theodore Roosevelt among others. The company's photographers worked on glass plates like this 8 by 10 inch negative to document American places and vessels, which were then published as views and postcards around the turn of the century. The picture is a useful record of how a luxury hull looked in naval service.
