The U.S.S. Monongahela, named for the river that joins the Allegheny at Pittsburgh to form the Ohio, appears here as a United States Navy cruiser in the years just before 1900. The view survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, made with a dry plate process that let photographers of the period work quickly and print in volume. It came from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold large catalogues of American scenes, and the record dates it to that company's 1901 catalog. Cruisers of this era scouted for fleets and protected sea lanes, and pictures like this one show how the navy was modernizing its ships around 1900.
