The gunboat *Nashville* gained a place in early Spanish-American War history when her crew fired the first American shots of that conflict off Cárdenas, Cuba, in April 1898. This glass negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company sometime between 1897 and 1901, shows the ship in the years after her commissioning, when the steel gunboat was a newer addition to the Navy's fleet. The company's large-format plates were valued for their fine detail, and this one preserves the vessel's profile as a record of American naval design at the turn of the century.
