Forecastle, the raised deck at the bow, is the focus of this view of the U.S.S. *Newark*, a protected cruiser of the early 1890s, not a battleship as the gallery board suggests. Its forward deck held the anchor gear, rigging and working equipment that kept a steel warship running, and the scene shows the practical, crowded side of naval life that official portraits often left out. The Detroit Publishing Company, a Detroit firm known for its large-format views of American places and people, made the 8 by 10 inch glass negative, which was printed for sale to a broad public. The exact date is uncertain and is estimated from the company's catalog, placing it sometime between 1891 and 1901.
