Rather than the guns or the decks, this view turns to the galley, the ship's kitchen aboard the U.S.S. *Newark*, a steel protected cruiser of the 1890s. The Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers across the country and sold views of ports, rail lines and daily life, and their large glass negatives recorded fine interior detail like this. Navy cooks of the period worked in cramped, hot spaces below deck to feed a crew of several hundred. The plate has a crack in its upper left corner, a reminder of how fragile these negatives were. The picture offers a rare look at the working life behind a warship's public face.
