Shipboard galleys were cramped, hot, and busy, and this view turns the camera on the working kitchen of the U.S.S. Newark, a steel cruiser of the 1890s rather than a battleship. Newark was a protected cruiser of the United States Navy, and the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its tinted and photochrome views of American places, also made many photographs of naval ships and their crews. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year is uncertain, but galley scenes like this offer a rare look at how a large crew was fed at sea around 1900.
