A sponsor's formal words, "I christen thee Nashville," are printed right on this view, tying it to a specific launch rather than a generic shipyard scene. The gunboat was built at Newport News, Virginia, where the Newport News shipyard had become one of the country's leading builders of steel warships. Launched in 1895, the Nashville later served in the Spanish-American War in 1898, operating off Cuba. The Detroit Publishing Company, whose glass-plate negatives recorded American towns, industry and travel around 1900, made the negative.
