A warning shot across the bow of a foreign warship is a dramatic subject, and this picture shows the U.S.S. *McCulloch* firing one at the German cruiser *Irene* in 1898, during the Spanish-American War. The image is a photograph of a painting by marine artist F. Cresson Schell, so the scene reflects his imagined composition rather than an on-the-spot camera record. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its large-scale photographic views and color prints, reproduced the work on an 8 x 10 inch glass negative.
