Marines sit down to a meal aboard the battleship U.S.S. Massachusetts, offering a glimpse of routine life on one of the Navy's early steel battleships. The Massachusetts was commissioned in 1896 and took part in operations off Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898. Marine detachments on warships ate together in shared messes, and this glass-plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, dated between 1896 and 1901, records that everyday side of shipboard life. The company's large catalog of American views makes it a useful document of how the Navy and its men were pictured at the turn of the century.
