Men waiting to be sent to the U.S.S. Vermont make this view distinct from the many battleship pictures on the board, which show the vessels themselves. Here the focus is on the people at the start of naval service, gathered before transfer to the ship. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that issued views of American places and activities in the 1890s and early 1900s, made the photograph, which is dated around 1895 in the record. The left edge of the print is broken off, and the date and caption come from an older card whose details have not been fully verified. Still, the image offers a glimpse of late nineteenth-century enlistment.
