Shown from the forward deck of the U.S.S. Maryland, this view looks at the ship's working front end rather than its guns or crew, which makes it useful for seeing the deck fittings and rigging of a turn-of-the-century warship. The Maryland was an armored cruiser of the Pennsylvania class, commissioned in 1904, and she later sailed with the Navy's Great White Fleet. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, produced large numbers of photographs of American ships, landmarks and towns, and the date here is an estimate of about 1905.
