This view shows the upper deck and gun turret of the USS Monitor, the Union ironclad photographed on the James River in 1862. The ship's low profile and rotating turret, designed by John Ericsson, set it apart from conventional wooden warships, and it had fought the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia to a draw at Hampton Roads that March. Photographer David B. Woodbury made the image as a glass stereograph using the wet collodion process, so its two paired views were meant to be seen together through a stereoscope. Pictures of the Monitor from this period are among the few that record the ship's odd, cramped working deck.
