The stereograph pair shows the USS *Casco*, one of the light-draft monitors the Union Navy built to operate in shallow rivers where deeper-hulled warships could not follow. Its setting on the James River in Virginia places it in the eastern theater, where Union gunboats and monitors supported army operations along the waterways. David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, is credited as the photographer, and he made the image on wet collodion glass plates, a process that required the photographer to prepare each plate just before exposure. The catalog dates the view to 1860, earlier than the vessel's wartime construction, so that date should be read with caution.
