Among the battleship views in the Bain collection, this glass negative is linked to the name "Florida," a title the Bain News Service wrote on its caption cards but that has not been independently verified. If it shows the dreadnought USS Florida, the ship was commissioned in 1911 as the lead vessel of its class and later served with the British Grand Fleet during World War I. The Bain agency sold news photographs to newspapers, so images like this one show how large warships were presented to the public in the early twentieth century.
