The caption identifies this glass negative as the battleship *Florida*, most likely the lead ship of the Florida-class dreadnoughts that the U.S. Navy commissioned in 1911. Those ships carried 12-inch guns in twin turrets and were among the first American battleships built to the all-big-gun design that followed the British *Dreadnought*. The Bain News Service label is unverified, so the ship's identity should be confirmed before it is cited. The Bain collection's news photographs and negatives from the early twentieth century document a navy that was expanding quickly and drawing public attention.
