A carved figurehead at the bow is the particular subject here, and the title links it to a battleship named Macedonia, though the record describes that name as unverified. Figureheads were once standard on wooden sailing warships, where the carved ornament helped give a vessel its identity, but they largely disappeared as navies moved to iron and steel hulls in the late nineteenth century. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of glass plates made by the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency active in the early twentieth century. Its survival shows how older ship decoration was still being recorded as warships modernized.
