This copy negative records a battleship, though the ship's name is not given in the catalog record, since the title was devised by Library staff. The image dates to 1924, a period when capital ships were central to naval power and when the 1922 Washington Naval Treaty had begun to limit new battleship construction. Because it survives as a copy made from an earlier original, the glass negative carries streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its coating, which are visible traces of its age. It came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French, as part of the National Photo Company Collection.
