Sailors gather on the deck of the USS *Monitor* with a cookstove visible at the left, a domestic detail set against an ironclad warship. The photograph was taken on the James River in 1862, when the *Monitor* was operating in Virginia waters after its famous March clash with the Confederate *Virginia* at Hampton Roads. Photographer David B. Woodbury worked in the region, and his stereograph captures the cramped, everyday routine aboard a vessel that was otherwise known for its turret and iron armor. The *Monitor* sank in a storm off Cape Hatteras at the end of 1862, so images like this one are among the few that show its crew at ordinary work.
