Resting in a dry dock at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston, the armored cruiser USS *Maryland* shows the bare hull that divers and shipwrights worked on below the waterline. The Navy used dry docks like this one to inspect, clean, and repair ships, and the exposed keel and hull plating make the scale of the vessel easy to see. The photograph is a glass plate negative from about 1905, made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American places and industry. Its survival in the Library of Congress collection makes it a useful record of early 20th-century naval shipbuilding in Massachusetts.
