Few American warships of the 1890s are as well remembered as the *Maine*, whose loss in Havana harbor in February 1898 became a rallying cry for war with Spain. This large 11 by 14 inch glass negative predates that disaster, since its record dates it to between 1890 and 1898, a span that includes the battleship's commissioning in 1895. The ship was one of the modern steel vessels the Navy was building as it rebuilt after years of neglect, and her sinking helped push the United States into the Spanish-American War that spring. The print is credited to the Detroit Publishing Company and attributed to a photographer named Hart.
