The subject is the U.S.S. Alabama, photographed from the side in a broadside view that shows the full length of the hull, its main gun turrets, and the secondary batteries along the superstructure. The Alabama was one of the Illinois-class battleships of the U.S. Navy, commissioned in 1900, and pictures like this one documented the new steel fleet as the country expanded its naval power. This print comes from an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm whose large-format work recorded American landscapes, cities, and ships around the turn of the twentieth century.
