The battleship *Massachusetts*, named for the Bay State, was one of the Navy's first steel battleships, commissioned in 1896 and best known for its role in the Spanish-American War in 1898. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative, dated somewhere between 1900 and 1910, comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American scenery, cities and ships for sale as postcards and travel views. Its survival as a large-format plate gives a sharp record of the warship during the years when the Navy was expanding its fleet and the battleship was becoming a symbol of American power.
