The battleship Massachusetts, commissioned in 1896, was one of the Navy's early steel capital ships and fought at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898. When this glass negative was made, between 1916 and 1917, the ship was an older vessel in the active fleet, and as the United States expanded its navy before entering World War I, views like this one recorded the service's big warships. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that sold views of American places and events, made many such images. The ship's title comes from the company's own notes, which are unverified, and the negative shows streaks and blemishes from age in its original coating.
