A glass dry plate negative of the gunboat Winona, one of the American naval gunboats of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Gunboats were smaller, lightly armed warships used for river and coastal patrol, shore bombardment, and showing the flag in ports abroad. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that produced large numbers of views of American places, people, and vessels between about 1890 and 1930. The negative was given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949, and it later entered the collection of the Library of Congress, which preserves its original catalog number and handwritten marks.
